About the CIS86 Instructor
You might wonder how I came to be up here:
- Career #1 • Computer Scientist: I spent most of my first career as a researcher at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, the central research labs for HP. I worked on a variety of projects at HP Labs, including 3D environments, broadband services infrastructures, consumer multimedia management, and hypertext systems for software engineering. I have programmed in Lisp (my favorite!), C and C++, Java, and Javascript, not to mention boring languages like COBOL and FORTRAN. I wrote my first program in 1973, and I haven't stopped since.
- Career #2 • Innkeeper: owner of Agate Cove Inn for 6.5 years.
- Career #3 • Graphic and Web Designer: I am currently working as a Web and graphic designer. I am a map fiend, and I’ve published a guidebook for the area, Mendocino Outdoors, now in its third edition. I am also a Photographer. I also have created a Web site called MendocinoFun.com, along with 2 other partners. Billed as the Discriminating Guide to Fun and Adventure on the Mendocino Coast, we’re trying to build the best guide to the Mendocino Coast. The site is built using the WordPress blogging software.

In the interest of full disclosure, I must say that I am currently a PC user, but I’m not religious about it. More importantly, I have been using Dreamweaver since 2000. Several people have expressed interest in knowing more about Dreamweaver. While I cannot use lecture time to discuss Dreamweaver, I am willing to help with it during individual consultation time or through email. The user interface of Codetch, the HTML editor that we will be using in class, was based on Dreamweaver.
